That one will get you pondering for ages won’t it ??  Would you like to know the answer ?

Research shows that flying insects spend most of their adult life feeding.

Most flying insects feed on organic food matter that tends to gather at or near floor level.

I’m sure you can think of the type of areas where organic matter would gather – behind kitchen fixtures and fittings, in gaps in tiles on floors, in stagnant water in gutters or on roofs etc etc.

So if you were a fly you would stay perhaps a little bit above the head height of a human and this is indeed what happens.

It makes sense therefore that if you are serious about flying insect control that you understand (or take professional advice) and exploit the natural characteristics of most flying insects and attack them in the following way:

a)       Keep opening doors and windows shut wherever possible - or fit insect proof screens on these opening apertures.

b)       Be scrupulously clean to remove possible fly breeding sites in the premises

c)       Install Ultraviolet flying insect killers in the correct positions and have enough of these units to cover the area that they are being installed in – this is often overlooked

Let’s just go into a little more detail on the last point that we just made – specific to the positioning of the units:

Fly killing machines should be sited at about 3 m from the ground.

Nearly all fly killers can be mounted on a wall so that will not get in the way of stacker trucks, deliveries etc .

A lot of the time, we are employed in sites which have a lot of Ultraviolet fly killing machines but these units have been installed in locations that will not maximise the catch (and therefore minimise the risk to the product) and also make regular servicing of these machines either hazardous or incredibly time-consuming.

As we all know “Time is Money” - so it is actually cheaper to service a fly killing machine at 3 m high fixed to the wall than 25 m high, hung from the apex of a roof where you need a cherry picker to access it, along with a second man to act as a Banks man.

One of these aforementioned sites recently moved their fly killing machines to locations that we had agreed with their management team and we can now service all of their units with one person working off of a small stepladder and the average catch per unit has gone up threefold !!

When we showed our client these results their comment immediately was  “That is bl**dy brilliant.  I can impress our client is no end with this, to show that we are taking even more care over their product !”

We are always available for advice on the best sighting of fly killing machines, fly screens the windows and doors, and general pest control issues.
